FAQ for using SNAP at Farms and Farmers Markets

How do I use my EBT card at a Farm?

SNAP retailer farms use small, hand-held terminals that accept EBT cards. These terminals work much like the terminals at store checkouts. Look for signs at farms that say, "We accept SNAP/EBT" or find a farm near you using our interactive map below.

When making a purchase at a farm or farmstore, since the process is in-person, you'll very likely have the opportunity to meet your farmer and learn more about the food they grow!

How do I use my EBT card at a Farmers Market?

When it comes to how they accept payment, all farmers markets do things a little differently. There are three main ways you can pay for food at farmers markets using SNAP EBT:

Scrip system: Many markets use their own unique currency system, which requires you to purchase tokens—or "scrip"—in advance. Scrip may be in the form of a paper receipt or tangible tokens. Farmers accept scrip as payment, just like cash. These markets have a welcoming information booth to make the exchange.

Direct swipe: Some farmers markets use small, hand-held terminals that accept EBT cards. These terminals work much like the terminals at store checkouts. Look for signs at individual booths that say, "We accept SNAP/EBT."

Alternative receipt system: At some markets, you shop for items first and then have the vendor/booth owner give you a receipt and set the items aside. When you're done shopping, you bring all your receipts to the information booth, pay using your SNAP EBT card, and then collect your purchases.

What is SNAP Doubling?

Some farmers markets participate in incentive programs designed to help SNAP recipients stretch their benefits further. This includes "matching" programs where a vendor or farm matches every dollar you spend there, up to a maximum amount. For example, you may spend only $10 worth of your own SNAP dollars—but you're able to take home $20 worth of food.

When at a participating market, visit the market manager booth. Swipe your SNAP/EBT card to make a purchase and the market manager will give you tokens/coupons/scrip worth up to double the value charged to your card. Not every farmers market or vendor takes part in these incentive programs, but it's worth asking next time you’re there.

Can I use SNAP for a CSA?

There are several farms in Northeastern CT that offer CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares and accept SNAP. Instead of pre-paying for an entire season, payment is made in installments and must be paid in-person. Usually payments are made on a bi-weekly basis or coincide with the recipient's benefit schedule. Ask your farmer about their payment policy.
