What is a CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture or CSA, is a simple idea in which a person or family becomes a member of a farm by purchasing a farm share. This farm share consists of food grown and harvested specially for the CSA at the peak of freshness over the course of a season. Buying a share and paying ahead of time, gives the farm a revenue stream at a time when it is needed most, to purchase supplies and other equipment in preparation of the upcoming harvest season. You will receive a selection of fresh, delicious food at scheduled intervals in a convenient way where you get to know your farmer.

How often do I pick up a Share?

Typically shares are picked up on a specific day during the week at the farm. Each farm offers a schedule for pick ups over an entire season. This could be weekly, biweekly, or monthly. Farms usually have options for prescheduled pickup date(s) and location(s) that allow you to choose what works best and is most convenient on a regular basis. Many farms offer pickup locations in the community or at farmers markets as well. If you miss a pickup, some farms offer flexibility to make up for the skipped share.

What is a Share?

CSA shares include an amount of farm food that is sized to match the typical eating habits of most people during the time interval of the share. Farmers tend to have 'Full' or 'Half' shares available. A full share should cover the needs of a family of four or more. A half share would work for couples or families with small children. Your eating habits may vary dramatically or not much at all. The goal is to provide what would be eaten during the share's time interval before picking up the next share, without supplemental trips to the grocery store.

What is in a Share?

Farms in Northeast CT include CSAs that offer vegetables, fruit, meat, value added products, and specialty items, like mushrooms or flowers. The selection changes over the course of the season depending on what is at peak harvest so there are always opportunities to try something new. There is a CSA for everyone, so you can choose the type of farm that works best for your dietary choices.

How much is a Share?

The overall value that a CSA share provides is similar to the savings of buying in bulk or at wholesale prices. The actual retail cost of the fresh food you receive is higher. AND you are also receiving food that has been harvested more recently than is sold at farmers markets!

The average cost for a produce-based CSA is approximately $20 a week for a half share and $40 a week for a full share, but this can vary greatly due to many factors. The total price also depends on the number of weeks or months during the season. The price is higher for shares that offer meat or value-added products or if the farm is certified organic.

Payment is typically provided in full prior to the beginning of the season. However, installment payment plans are sometimes available, including for those that accept SNAP food assistance.

What are the benefits of a CSA?

It can help develop an understanding of what real food is and the value of its production, which means better nutritional choices and health throughout your life.

It provides the opportunity for you to know your farmer and for farmers to get to know the people for whom they grow for. It's a healthy relationship!

When farmers know how much to grow before the beginning of the season, they can plan the use of their resources more efficiently, which means less waste (of both money and produce).

It directs dollars into the local economy and local pockets. There is a value and respect for all farm workers, most of whom live locally, which provides jobs.
